Sue Hiatt's Leyvie Bag

Sue Hiatt sent us pictures of her Leyvie Bag! She made it up in adorable Black and White prints. (one of our favorites =] )
"I love crafts and sewing. I weave baskets, knit, crochet, cross-stitch, needlepoint, and both machine and hand embroider.  My sewing consists of crafts & home décor, American Girl doll clothes, & some clothes for our 2 grand daughters. I’m just beginning to really do some quilting but have completed 2 vintage whole cloth appliqued baby quilts (from kits that were started by my mother & grandmother). My UFO stash is never ending!"    - Sue
UFOs are something we can all relate to! Thank you so much for sharing your bag! It turned out great!

  1. Is that bias trim all the way around the purse? That is one of my "least favorite" things to put on. But I love this purse.

  2. Yes it is bias tape and I have to admit that I wasn't looking forward to doing it. It's been a long time since I've made my own bias tape and joined it, but rotary cutters make it so much easier today to cut, and my basic sewing book reminded me how to join the pieces. The pattern calls for stitching the bias tape on with the machine then folding it over and stitching by hand. I cheated and stitched it all by machine. With the design in the fabric, nobody will ever notice especially if you make sure your thread matches well. I also didn't read that part of the directions throughly enough and didn't put the trim on in 1 continuous application like I was supposed to. The top edge ended up being added after I realized what I had done, but again, nobody else will know by looking at it. I also changed the inside pocket to make it the width of the purse, added another on the other side, and divided them into sections that fit my essential "stuff". This is a great size and shape. I can see making it again in bright colors. If you decide to make it, I recommend buying the hardware from Whistlepig Creek (and, no, I have no connection to them or their site). I just don't have a fabric store other than Wal-Mart closer than 40 miles, and it saved me a trip to the store looking for the right thing. Another plus was the fact that I had some questions about the pattern and both times I e-mailed Sue, she responded quickly. Her fast reply made it possible for me to finish the purse Saturday night in time to use it Easter Sunday. This was way more answer than you asked for, but I hope it helps you or someone else. I know I appreciate learning from other people's experience.
